With its famous castles and close proximity to Paris, the Loire Valley is a very active wine region with over 55,000 hectares of vines. The valley stretches from the Massif Central (Auvergne) to southern Brittany, where the Loire river empties into the Atlantic Ocean. Long and wide, the valley can be divided into seven wine zones due to the very different climates and soil compositions. Grape varieties also vary by sub-region. The main varieties are Muscadet, Gros Plant, Chenin, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. Across the board, wines produced in this vast region have freshness and finesse in common when well crafted.
The Loire Valley produces wines for all occasions: sparkling wines, light and fruity reds, rich red wines suitable for aging, dry and mineral whites and sweet and mellow dessert wines. There’s something for everyone, here.
