Pouilly Fuisse Les Ronchvats 2016

Another Saumaize-Michelin marvel

Pouilly-Fuisse is an appellation in southern Burgundy where the limestone plateau that makes it such a prized region for viticulture ends. Two large, dramatical rock formations have become the emblems of this appellation. At the foot of one of these is the cellar of Roger Saumaize, one of the best winemakers in Mâconnais. His white wines are produced with a care and determination that have awarded him peer and industry recognition. His intuitive approach, organic and human, is a refreshing return to our roots in this industrialized world. Nervous, straight and mineral, this beautifully crafted Pouilly-Fuissé is complex and offers a lot of enjoyment.

This wonderful wine deserves a refined dish to complement its mineral and pure personality. White meat in sauce, seafood, fish and even sweetbreads would all be delightful options.

About the producer

Domaine Saumaize-Michelin

A domaine where respect for the environment and attention to detail are paramount

Roger and Christine Saumaize (née Michelin) have meticulously made every effort to put everything in place to achieve the full potential of their vineyards. The vines have been bio-dynamically farmed since 2005, vineyard work is primarily manual, and great importance is attached to the maintenance of bacterial life and the management of flora and micro flora diversity. Mastery of these elements in the vineyard is key to obtaining quality grapes and produce wines that accurately represent the Mâconnais terroir. The 9.50 hectare estate is located in Vergisson and has limestone, trias rock and marl terroirs. Each vineyard parcel has a unique biodiversity.

About the region

Mâconnais in Burgundy

A hilly region where Chardonnay thrives

The Mâconnais is Burgundy’s southernmost vineyard region. Its limestone subsoil covered with clay or silt is ideally suited for making superb whites that easily stand up to those from the renowned Côte d’Or. The area is sunnier and warmer, and the risks of frost and hail are lower. The esteemed domaines and winemakers primarily work in the southern part of the region, in the Saint-Véran and Pouilly-Fuissé appellations. The Viré and Clessé villages, located on a limestone strip in the northern section, also produce good, plump Burgundian Chardonnay.

The southern section of the Mâconnais has several well-known appellations such as Pouilly Fuissé and Vergisson, for example. It is in these vineyards, at the foot of spectacular rock formations like Solutré and Vergisson, that fine Chardonnays is grown that regularly is skilfully vinified into remarkable white wines.
