Sangiovese and Merlot: a waltz for the taste buds

Giovan Battista Basile created this blend with the help of consultant Roberto Cipresso. Composed of 50% Sangiovese and 50% Merlot, this cuvée shows how smoothly the Merlot has adapted to the local terroir and soaked up the vineyard’s unique characteristics. This organic wine is mineral and without artifice. The Sangiovese’s acidity is balanced and supports the Merlot’s richness, as well as and the roasted nut notes from the oak barrel aging. The maceration process and fermentation by indigenous yeasts lasts about twenty days in stainless steel tanks. The wine is then transferred to French oak (Allier and Tronçais) for 18 months.

With its dark ruby red colour, the Commandante from Basile reveals a rich blackcurrant nose of plum, cherry, pomegranate and vanilla. The palate is balanced, rich and easy to drink at the same time, and ends with flavours of black currant and black cherry.

Braised red meats, game, aged hard cheeses, or pasta stuffed with meat.

Calcareous “Galestro” limestone

Organic vineyard, no herbicides, pesticides or other synthetic products. South-west exposure with an average altitude of 350 meters. Density of 4,600 plants per hectare

Harvested by hand in small 18 kg crates. Vinified with indigenous yeasts. Aged in French oak barrels for 18 months, followed by 30 months of bottle aging

Basile Agricola

A winery that does everything to minimize the carbon footprint

The Basile brothers, Domenico and Giovan Battista acquired the estate in 1999 after it had been abandoned for over 30 years. This suited the brothers who wanted to create an organic winery and build a facility with no carbon footprint on the environment. The results from the 2004 vintage were encouraging as the terroir clearly demonstrated its potential. Today the brothers continue to make efforts and improvements in their six hectare vineyard to follow organic viticulture practices and optimize their grapes’ quality potential. No herbicides or synthetic products are tolerated at the estate and only organic materials are used as fertilizers.

Maremma in Tuscany

The next up-and-coming Tuscan sub-region

The Montecucco DOC, located in the southern sub-region Maremma, between the prestigious Brunello Di Montalcino  and Morellino di Scansano appellations was created in 2010. Many experts agree that it is the new sub-region to watch in Tuscany. The terroir is beautiful and the climate perfect for high quality viticulture. The excellent wines which are being produced here are attracting the attention of a growing number of wine enthusiasts who are looking for exceptional value for their money. As is mostly the case in Tuscany, the wines are mainly composed of Sangiovese, but several estates are also experimenting with international varietals such as Merlot or Cabernet as they adapt well to Maremma’s terroir.

Maremma is one of Italy’s most interesting wine-growing areas. Mainly known for its cattle farms and nature parks, it is now the center of a thriving wine business. The soils are mainly composed of shale and limestone, and the proximity of the ocean helps to temper the hot summers.
